Founded in 1977 by Al Caputo, Tapis began by providing custom carpet for VIP aircraft. The product offering next included Ultrasuede®, which revolutionized the industry with its stain-resistance and luxuriousness. Soon after that, Tapis began offering Ultraleather®, which has since become an industry favorite. Tapis continued by adding TapiSuede™, its namesake faux suede; Grospoint and Geneve, wool fabrics that became mainstays for bulkheads and chair bases; and various silks and woven fabrics.
Tapis has been in the forefront of the aviation industry with innovations that include one of the first AN61 heat-release fabrics (now used by over 50 commercial carriers). Their advances also include appliquéd, embroidered and screen printed ceiling panels for VIP interiors to state of the art bulkhead programs for Boeing, Airbus and premiere airlines. Tapis was also one of the first companies to provide qualified soft furnishing for vertical application to the commercial aviation market in 1986.
Tapis continues to lead the industry under the direction of Al's daughter Karen and his son Bob. Karen Caputo has been with the company since its inception 40 years ago and has been President for 30 years. In this ever-changing industry, Tapis’ consistency in leadership, commitment to customer service, and high quality product offering have contributed to their longevity. Most critical to their success is the ability to respond to the evolving needs of this specialized design market and Tapis continues to provide new and exciting possibilities for aircraft interiors. While continuing to add new products through the years, Tapis has maintained the ability to successfully comply with updated flammability requirements without sacrificing design needs. Tapis’ growth can be seen most recently in the commercial seating segment. In early 2017 Ultraleather® Promessa® by Ultrafabrics® was selected partner for the LIFT 737 Tourist Class Seating Program.
